  5. Connected North (a Program of TakingITGlobal)
Description:

Connected North connects Indigenous students living in remote communities to virtual learning experiences and opportunities not available to them locally. Through this interactive education program, students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 can access learning opportunities through live, high definition video technology.

The program’s commitment is to provide students and teachers with access to virtual content that is engaging and innovative, with the hope of increasing feelings of empowerment in school and in life. More information on our program objectives and guiding principles can be found on our website. Sessions are requested directly by teachers and students, and are customized to fit their interests and learning goals.

Connected North live video sessions include experiences like:
Connecting students from schools across the country for educational collaboration
Teacher professional development workshops and training
Virtual field trips to museums, galleries, aquariums and more
Role model mentoring to build hope and pride
Sharing of cultural celebrations
Exploring future pathways for education and careers

The Session Menuis a showcase of all the diverse content provided on the network through our 400+ content providers. Each session is approximately 45min in length and range in topics across all subject areas with a focus on contributing to the well-being of students.

The program is made possible thanks to a large ecosystem of donors and supporters, ranging from governments, to corporate partners, family foundations and individuals. Founded by Cisco Canada in 2013 and now operated by registered charity TakingITGlobal (since 2016), the program has grown to support 199 participating schools and over 35,000 students. We appreciate the on-going support and guidance from the community partners we work with. Connected North is a recipient of the 2020 Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)’s Humanitarian Award and the 2017 Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC) Award for Excellence in Public Sector Innovation.
